Lady Plainsmen experience a week of losses

Perkins County’s Lady Plainsmen fell to the three opponents they faced over the last week, which included Holyoke, Sedgwick County and a make-up game with Kimball.

Holyoke

The Lady Plainsmen hosted Holyoke Tuesday, Jan. 26. This was Holyoke’s first game of the season after Colorado loosened restrictions on extracurricular activities in schools.

The game started out slow for Perkins County, who scored just two points in the first quarter and seven in the second. The score at half was 15-9 with Holyoke ahead.

The third quarter also had little scoring from the Lady Plainsmen, whereas their opponents put 20 more points on the board. The girls picked up their game in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points, but it was not enough to close the gap and Holyoke’s Lady Dragons won 45-29. Freshman Katie Cook was the top scorer for Perkins County with 11 points. Freshman Kailee Potts had the most rebounds with six, and junior Hallie Fisher was close behind with five rebounds.

Sedgwick County

Thursday, Jan. 28, Perkins County hosted another Colorado school just starting out their season: Sedgwick County.

The Lady Plainsmen put up a fight against Sedgwick County’s Lady Cougars, scoring 12 points in the first quarter while Sedgwick County scored 18. The second quarter was again close with Perkins County scoring 14 while holding their opponents to 15 points. The score at half was 33-26. Sedgwick County grew their lead in the third and fourth quarters, scoring in the double digits in both quarters. The Lady Plainsmen put eight points on the board in the third, and nine in the fourth. The Lady Cougars, having added 36 more points to their score, won the game 69-43. Coach Deanne Bishop said both Holyoke and Sedgwick County did a good job of attacking the basket and got good body positioning on offensive rebounds for put-backs.

Potts was the top scorer for the Lady Plainsmen with 17 points, and senior Dani Burge was close behind at 14 points.

Kimball

Monday, the Lady Plainsmen traveled to Kimball for a make-up game. The original game was set for Dec. 11, 2020, however due to issues with Covid, the game was rescheduled for Feb. 1. The game started close, and remained that way throughout, as Perkins County ended the first quarter just one point ahead of their opponents with five points to Kimball’s four.

Kimball put 16 points on the board in the second, and Perkins County added 12 to their score, ending the first half 20-17 with Kimball ahead. It looked like the Lady Plainsmen could close the small gap and take the game after scoring 13 points in the third while holding Kimball to eight. Kimball, however, came back in the final quarter and scored 20 points to Perkins County’s 11, ending the game 48-41.

“We put ourselves in a bad position with fouls and turnovers, and that led to a bad outcome,” Bishop said. “It seemed like Kimball had a spring in their step that we didn’t match.”

Potts scored 24 points through the game, making her Perkins County’s top scorer. She had the only two three-point baskets for the Lady Plainsmen. Burge got nine rebounds for the Perkins County, closely followed by senior Rylee Huff with seven and sophomore Meredith Gloy with six.

Tuesday, Perkins County hosted Maxwell for a home game. Parents’ night was held in between the varsity girls and varsity boys games. See game results in next week’s issue.
