Lady Plainsmen fall to Fighting Irish

The Lady Plainsmen volleyball team held their home court season opener last Thursday night, Aug. 30 against the North Platte St. Pat’s Lady Irish.

Perkins County was defeated in three sets, bringing their current season record to 1-2.

St. Pat's

The first set started out rocky for the Lady Plainsmen with their first serve of the game going into the net. St. Pat’s went on a six-point run before Perkins County called a time-out.

Perkins County had trouble against the Lady Irish’s serves and could not seem to get their offense running. The team scored their first point on a Lady Irish service error, bringing the score to 11-1.

The Lady Plainsmen continued to struggle with missed or shanked digs and lack of offense as St. Pat’s racked up points. In addition, St. Pat’s received two back-to-back points for rotation errors by the Lady Plainsmen. St. Pat’s won the set, 25-3.

“NPSP is a good team,” commented Head Coach Monica Cole. “We knew they would be salty, athletic and scrappy and we knew that we had to be on top of our game to compete with them.”

As the second set began, Perkins County came out with fire and were able to get their offense running. Dani Burge, Hallie Fisher and Bella Fraizer all had successful kills as the Lady Plainsmen seemed to figure out their offense, keeping the score within one to two points of the Lady Irish.

However, as the set went on, Perkins County again fought with missed digs and a lack of communication, providing St. Pat’s with free passes that allowed the Lady Irish to run an effective offense against them.

The Lady Irish pulled ahead with the win, 25-17.

“The first set, we did not do well on serve receive and keeping the ball alive. After talking about that in between sets, the girls competed much better in the second,” Cole said, adding “going from earning three points to earning 17 points is a huge jump in competition and so, for that, I was proud of them.”

The final set brought more frustrations for Perkins County as the Lady Irish hammered them with ace serves and found holes in the Lady Plainsmen defense.

Despite multiple attack errors by the Lady Irish, St. Pat’s was able to pull ahead in the final set. Ace serves and lack of communication from the Lady Plainsmen brought the final set to an end with the Lady Irish taking the win, 25-11.

“We are a work in progress and we will continue to get better as the season goes on, we just have to keep working hard and challenging ourselves,” Cole said.

Cole went on to explain the team will be focusing during practice to fine tune their unforced errors and execute the ball right away.

Emma Schrotberger: 5 points, 1 kill, 3 digs; Bella Fraizer: 2 points, 2 kills, 1 assist, 1 dig, 1 solo block; Hallie Fisher: 2 points, 2 kills, 1 assist, 1 dig; Aryn Seiler: 1 point, 2 kills, 1 assist, 8 digs; Dani Burge: 2 kills, 2 digs; Rylee Huff: 5 digs; Samantha Patrick: 4 digs.
