Lady Plainsmen fall to Gothenburg

The Lady Plainsmen faced Gothenburg in a home game Saturday, Dec. 12, where they suffered their second loss of the season.

Gothenburg scored the first point of the game 30 seconds in with a freethrow shot from Gothenburg’s #32 Marley Kennicutt.

The Swedes picked up another 11 points through the quarter, unmatched by the Lady Plainsmen.

Although Perkins County fought for rebounds and had a number of steals, the Swedes continued to hold them to zero points until near the end of the second quarter. By then Gothenburg had scored six more points.

Senior Dani Burge scored the first point for the Lady Plainsmen with a freethrow shot with just five seconds left on the clock for the second quarter.

After rebounding Burge’s missed second shot, senior Rylee Huff was fouled and sank both her freethrows, making the score 3-17 at half.

Burge made another freethrow early in the third quarter, the first point of the quarter for the Lady Plainsmen.

Perkins County earned two more points with 4:25 left on the clock after freshman Katie Cook scored a two-point field goal.

Gothenburg scored 18 points in the third quarter, making the game 6-35 going into the final quarter.

The game picked up for the Lady Plainsmen in the fourth quarter, as they scored 10 points while holding their opponents to 11 points.

Perkins County fell to Gothenburg with a final score of 16-46.

“Gothenburg is a solid team that shoots the ball well and passes it even better,” said coach Deanne Bishop. “To hold a team like Gothenburg to only 17 points in the first half and net ourselves 14 steals for the game means we are doing a lot of defense things right.”

She added that they need to continue to look for opportunities to “catch ready to shoot” and to take high-quality shots.

Cook was the top scorer for Perkins County on Saturday with a total of four points. Perkins County’s season record was 1-2 after Saturday.
