Lady Plainsmen gear up for sub-districts

Perkins County’s girls went 1-1 in their games last week against Maxwell and South Platte. The team has one more regular season game before heading into sub-districts.

Maxwell

Tuesday, Feb. 2, the Lady Plainsmen hosted Maxwell.

Maxwell won the tip and hustled to their basket, but were unable to score. After nearly two minutes of the ball changing possession, senior Rylee Huff scored the first point of the game when she sank her second of two free throw shots.

The Lady Plainsmen scored 13 unanswered points in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, both teams scored nine points, making the game 22-9 at half with Perkins County ahead.

The Lady Plainsmen continued with strong scoring and aggressive defense, and put 15 more points on the board in the third, holding Maxwell to just eight points.

Perkins County finished out the game scoring eight points to Maxwell’s 10. The final score was 45-27, adding a win to the Lady Plainsmen’s record.

Coach Deanne Bishop said the girls approached the game with “light hearts” and focused effort, and it showed on the court.

“We had a near season-high on field goal percentage, transition points and points off turnovers,” she noted. “We had more rebounds and defensive deflections than Maxwell.”

The team’s 19 steals, she added, show the girls were keyed in hitting their defensive rotations.

“We were composed with the ball and had a near season-low of turnovers with 18,” Bishop continued.

Freshman Kailee Potts scored 17 points, making her the top scorer for Perkins County. Sophomore Meredith Gloy had the most steals with seven.

South Platte

Saturday, Perkins County traveled to Big Springs for a game against South Platte’s Blue Knights.

South Platte won the tip, and though they did not immediately score, the Blue Knights made the first basket of the game.

Junior Meghan Bishop scored the first two points for Perkins County, meanwhile South Platte had added five more points to their score.

By half, the score was 28-16 with the Blue Knights ahead.

Perkins County’s defensive skills helped keep the scores in the next two quarters relatively close; the third quarter was 11-6 in South Platte’s favor, and the fourth was 11-9, this time with Perkins County ahead.

In the end, South Platte won 48-33.

“South Platte is one of the leading D1 teams in the state and boasts a stout 17-1 record,” Bishop said. “We knew they would be fierce competitors.

Bishop noted the girls were able to play nearly-even with South Platte after the first quarter, and said defensively the team did some good things.

“We held their leading scorer, who averages 19.2 points per game, to just 11 points,” she said.

“South Platte had to earn nearly one-fifth of their points from the freethrow line.”

While she wishes the team would have had more offensive pressure to get out of various situations, looking at the big picture she can’t be disappointed.

Potts was the top scorer for Perkins County with 10 points, with Bishop just behind her at eight points.

Bishop also got seven rebounds for the team.

Tuesday evening, the Lady Plainsmen hosted Creek Valley for a home game.

Cheer and basketball senior night was held before the varsity girls game, and Teammates Mentor Recognition was held at halftime. See next week’s issue for full coverage.
