The Perkins County Lady Plainsmen basketball team put together an impressive stretch of play over the holiday break, sweeping their home tournament before opening the new year with a decisive win over Hemingford.
Holiday Tournament
Perkins County hosted its holiday tournament December 22–23 at Perkins County High School and made the most of home-court advantage with back-to-back victories. The Lady Plainsmen opened tournament play on Monday, December 22, with a 61–51 win over Crawford. Perkins County set the tone early and maintained control throughout the contest, using balanced scoring and consistent defensive pressure to keep the Rams within reach but never fully back in the game.
The momentum carried into Tuesday’s matchup against Mitchell, where the Lady Plainsmen completed the tournament sweep with a 58–46 victory. Perkins County leaned on disciplined defense and efficient offense, limiting Mitchell’s scoring opportunities while executing well in transition to protect their lead.
Hemingford
After a week of practice, the Lady Plainsmen returned to action on January 3, hosting the Hemingford Bobcats. Perkins County jumped out early and never looked back, earning a convincing 62–36 win.
The Lady Plainsmen set the pace in the opening quarter, outscoring Hemingford 17–8, and continued to build their lead in the second quarter with a 19–11 advantage. Perkins County’s defense tightened even further after halftime, holding the Bobcats to just five points in the third quarter while scoring 14. Both teams added 12 points in the final frame, sealing the Plainsmen’s dominant home victory.
Senior Ella Homan led Perkins County with 20 points. Addison York was strong on the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds, while Madison Potts dished out eight assists. York also made her presence felt defensively with five blocks.
Head coach Deanne Bishop credited the team’s defensive intensity and rebounding for the win.
“The pressure we applied on defense led to 24 Hemingford turnovers and 22 points for us,” Bishop said. “Our girls hit the boards hard and hauled in 18 more rebounds than Hemingford. Hemingford showed us several defensive looks, and the girls did a great job adjusting our offense accordingly.”
Next Action
The Lady Plainsmen will be back on the road Friday, January 9, when they travel to North Platte to take on North Platte St. Patrick’s.
