PC girls 5-2, on five-game winning streak

After earning their first win of the season over Kimball Friday, Dec. 10, the Lady Plainsmen proceeded to add four additional wins to their record for the early season, making them 5-2 after the first round of the Perkins County Holiday Tournament.

In the last week, the girls have faced four opponents: Paxton, Garden County, Dundy County-Stratton and Hyannis.

Paxton

The Lady Plainsmen hosted the Paxton Tigers Tuesday, Dec. 14, where they gained their second win of the season.

In the first quarter, the teams were toe-to-toe in scoring, each ending the quarter with 11 points on the scoreboard.

The Lady Plainsmen began to pull away from the Tigers in the second quarter, putting up another 15 points while holding Paxton to 10 for a 26-21 lead.

Paxton and Perkins County each 12 each in the third, making the score 38-33 going into the final eight minutes of the game.

In the fourth quarter, Kailee Potts, Libby Cole, Meredith Gloy and Autumn Anderson together made 11 baskets for a total of 19 points. Potts scored 13 points, and Cole, Gloy and Anderson each scored two.

They held Paxton to just six points, giving the Lady Plainsmen an 18-point, 57-39, win.

Potts was the top scorer with 29 points. She also made seven steals throughout the game. As a team, the girls got 40 rebounds, Cole leading with 11 and Hallie Fisher close behind with seven.

Garden County

Thursday, Dec. 16, the girls had their second away game of the season, this time against the Garden County Eagles.

Potts scored the first points of the game after Perkins County controlled the tip.Potts was fouled going for a layup and sank both free throws, giving the Lady Plainsmen their first lead.

Perkins County added another two points before Garden County made their first basket, nearly two minutes into the game. Perkins County held on to their four-point lead throughout the first quarter, scoring 12 points to Garden County’s eight.

Perkins County not only remained ahead throughout the rest of the game, but in the second and third quarters held their opponents to just six points per quarter, making the score 53-20 entering the final quarter.

The Lady Plainsmen ended the game with a 37-point lead over the Eagles, making the final score 74-37.

Twenty-one of the team’s 74 points came from Potts. Gloy added 15 with another 11 from Fisher.

Cole, Fisher, Potts and Meghan Bishop all worked hard on rebounds-—Cole finishing with seven, Fisher six, and Bishop and Potts five apiece.

DCS

Saturday, Dec. 18, Perkins County hosted Dundy County Stratton, where the Lady Plainsmen added yet another win to their record with another double-digit scoring margin.

The Lady Plainsmen once again gained an early lead, which they continued through all four quarters of the game.

As the first quarter was rounding down with just three minutes left, Perkins County had picked up a seven-point lead, 10-3. DCS however added four more points by the end of the quarter while Perkins County added another pair to end the first quarter, 12-7.

The Lady Plainsmen again held their opponents to just seven points in the second quarter, and built a nine-point, 23-14 lead.

In the final half of the game, Perkins County outscored DCS by five in the third quarter, 9-4, and 16-11 in the fourth. 

That gave the Lady Plainsmen a 48-29 win and a 4-2 record headed into the Perkins County Holiday Tournament face Hyannis in the first round.

Potts was again the team’s top scorer with 31 of the team’s 48 points. The remaining points came from Hallie Fisher with 6, Bishop, Cole and Maggie Fisher each with 3 and Gloy with 2.

The team’s collected 33 rebounds and 10 steals. Cole and Gloy each had seven rebounds, and Gloy led the team in steals with six.

Holiday Tournament: Hyannis

The Perkins County Holiday Tournament kicked off Monday, Dec. 20, when  the Lady Plainsmen faced Hyannis in the opening round.

Hyannis got on the board first with Perkins County followed with a basket and free throw from Potts. The Lady Plainsmen slowly started to secure a lead and ended the first quarter ahead 15-8.

They again scored in the double-digits in the second quarter with 19 while holding Hyannis to just six points. That gave Perkins County 34-14 lead at the break.

One of the ways Perkins County maintained their lead was to control the rebounding under the basket. Over the game, the team had 38 rebounds.

The Lady Plainsmen put up another 31 points in the second half, while holding Hyannis to 16 points, giving Perkins County their fifth win of the season.

This advanced the girls to the championship round of the tournament where they faced Wallace, who beat their first opponent, Creek Valley, 69-33.

The final round of the holiday tournament was Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Plainsmen will hit the road to start off January with a game Tuesday, Jan. 4 at Potter, and another game Friday, Jan. 7 at North Platte St. Pat’s.
