PC Plainsmen 20 strong for football season

Last year’s Perkins County Plainsmen team saw their championship dream elude them in a second round playoff loss to Burwell.

While it’s of little consolation to the Plainsmen, Burwell went on to win the Class D1 football title last season.

Getting that close has served as a real motivator for the 20 players on this year’s squad, first-year Head Coach Lance Steffen said this week.

“That’s been fuel for us this season,” the coach said.

The Plainsmen were right there knocking on the door but have seen their season come to a close in the second round the two previous years.

Steffen said they’ve been focusing a lot about how to get over that hump and win the close ones.

Each of those two playoff games were decided on the final possession of the game, he noted.

Steffen likes progress

The new head coach feels good about his team’s progress during preseason practices.

He said it’s nice to have some familiar faces in some of the spots. Plus, the players he’s plugged in to fill the gaps from graduation have been working out well.
