Senior Meghan Bishop jumps up to block a spike from one of Gothenburg’s players.

PC volleyball suffers losses

The Lady Plainsmen volleyball team played three games last week—a triangular versus Chase County and Gothenburg, and a three-set game against Sedgwick County—and they fell in each of the three games.

This leaves the team’s record 11-8 with a handful of games before sub-districts.

“It was a super competitive week for us,” said coach Monica Cole.

“We knew we had out work cut out for us, and even though the score didn’t show, the girls played hard and did some really good things.”

PC Triangular

Last Tuesday, Sept. 28, Perkins County hosted Gothenburg and Chase County for a triangular.

For their first game of the evening, Perkins County faced off against Chase County’s Longhorns.

The Longhorns got the first point of the game, but Perkins County followed up with a point of their own. The Lady Plainsmen managed to stay close to their opponents in scoring until Chase County started to break away.

Perkins County lost in both sets played against Chase County 25-15 and 25-16.

“Anyone that watched the game against Chase County would have seen the fight and hustle in this team,” Cole said.

Gothenburg’s Swedes were Perkins County’s next opponent, who held a 15-5 record heading into the evening’s games.

Despite battling hard, Perkins County fell to Gothenburg in two sets, 25-9 and 25-17, making the Lady Plainsmen 0-2 for the evening’s triangular.

Sedgwick County

Thursday, Sept. 30, the Perkins County volleyball team traveled to Julesburg, Colo. for a game against Sedgwick County.

In the first set of the afternoon, Perkins County and Sedgwick County were neck and neck in scoring for a while, but about midway through the game, Sedgwick County pulled away and won the first set 25-18.

The Lady Plainsmen continued to battle through the next two sets, but suffered losses in both, 25-11 and 25-16.

“Overall, it was a bummer of a week on the record side of things, but I am proud of the grit and determination that they played with for most of the games,” Cole said. “These girls have come a long way in their mental game, even from last year, so seeing them not just roll over for an opponent and continue to fight is a step in the right direction.”

At this point in the season, Cole added, the girls have to be ready to compete with anyone and everyone on the court. She noted a lot of teams are reaching their peak right now, so the Lady Plainsmen need to do the same. “Buckling down on our fundamentals, trusting each other along with ourselves and playing with confidence are our biggest things at this point.”

JV Tournament

Perkins County hosted a junior varsity tournament Monday, Oct. 4 with six teams in attendance.

The jayvee Lady Plainsmen team went 1-1 in their pool with a loss against Wallace and a win over South Platte, allowing them to advance to the Championship based off the tiebreaker of points scored.

Perkins County faced Hershey in the Championship, and after a loss to Hershey, the Lady Plainsmen junior varsity team earned second place in the tournament.

“Coach Lee and I are super proud of their efforts,” Cole said. “Once they found their energy and started having a lot of fun with it, the chemistry changed for the evening and they played really well. Their hustle and communication was great against a good Hershey team.”
