Perkins County’s Cross Country team is entering the 2019 season with nine runners, eight boys and one girl.

First-year Coach Seth Burge said while nine runners is a significant drop from last year, it can be expected with seven graduating seniors.

“Cross country is very demanding both physically and mentally, so I applaud these nine runners for devoting themselves to this sport.”

Burge said Evan Sestak and Caleb Lagler, the only returning letter winners, have been leaders so far this preseason. Other returning runners who will round out the varsity and JV teams for the boys include seniors Matthew Aerni and Sam McArtor,  junior Carter Krajewski and sophomore Colton Pouk. Brient Wood and Tony Lyon are incoming freshmen who will also be vying for a spot on the varsity team.

He added that Meredith Gloy, lone runner for the girls, has put in a lot of summer miles and will be a promising individual competitor.

Tristan Stephenson will be assisting Burge.

The team’s first meet will be Thursday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. MT at North Platte St. Pat’s.
