Perkins County athletes face high winds and cold temperature at last week’s Dundy County Stratton Invite. While many athletes wore their extra clothing, PCS Head Coach Shayne Hite said the Plainsmen showed their mental toughness as they worked for the best performances. Hannah Bishop, above, and Brock Tines, below, were among the first runners on the track in the 3,200-meter relay.

The Perkins County School social media post told you everything you needed to know about the Dundy County Stratton Invite last Tuesday, #ItWasSoCold and #NeededGloves.

More importantly, the post also included that the Plainsmen boys were team champions and the girls team was runner up.

Many athletes chose to compete in their warm up clothes, but Perkins County Head Coach Shayne Hite said, after talking to his athletes, they completely understood that running with sweats would just slow them down.

So while some Plainsmen wore stocking caps and gloves, none wore sweats while running.

“I would have to say my athletes had the best mental toughness of the day,” Hite said.

The Perkins County boys team set 12 personal bests and the girls team had nine PRs.

Blake Garner was first in the triple jump, 100 and 200 meter dashes, including a personal best in the 200; Mason McGreer swept the long distance races; and Casey Hanson won the long jump.

For the Plainsmen girls team, Meredith Gloy had a personal best in her 3200 meter run win, Kailee Potts won both hurdle races and Libby Cole won the high jump.

The PCS girls also won two relays, the 4x400 and the 4x800. Running in the 1600 meter relay were Kenna Busick, Cole, Hannah Bishop and Potts, while the 3200 meter relay included Bishop, Gloy, Charis Goodell and Busick.

The Plainsmen set seven personal bests in the sprints, but Hite didn’t feel the strong wind was a contributing factor.

“It was kind of a weird direction and with the cold it didn’t seem to assist them as much as we thought it might. We actually had some PRs in events that required a full lap or more,” Hite said.

That included PRs by all three boys in the 800 meter dash, Colton Kroeker, Rylee Schrotberger and Colson Uehling, who finished second, third and sixth, respectively.

In the team races, the Plainsmen boys team won by 12 points, 155-143 over Arapahoe. The PCS girls team was six points behind Cambridge, 144-150.

Up next

The Plainsmen will head to Sutherland Friday where a good crop of athletes await.

A nice week of weather to prepare certainly wouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings.

“It will be interesting to see where we are if we can compete in some good weather. We’re not there yet, but this week of warm weather will help get them in shape,” Hite said.

Teams competing Friday will be Arthur County, Chase County, Dundy County Stratton, Garden County, Hershey, Hyannis, Maxwell, Paxton, Sandhills Valley, North Platte St. Pat’s, Sutherland and Wallace.

Tuesday will be the much smaller Chase County Invite.

Also competing in Imperial will be DCS, Garden County. Ogallala.
