PCS sending relays, runners to Omaha

For the second year in a row, Mother Nature has thrown a haymaker at the Perkins County track teams. After last year’s wet mess at Mitchell, Mother Nature one-upped herself Thursday.

Lightning delays put this year’s District C9 meet so far behind schedule that the entire meet had to moved midway through the event from Grant to Ogallala.

Perkins County Head Coach Shayne Hite said his Plainsmen would definitely rather be at home and have that “home field” advantage.

“Considering the conditions and the level of competition that was here PC had a pretty successful day,” Hite said.

Mason McGreer qualified in four events, the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs, plus teamed up with Colton Kroeker, Rylee Schrotberger and Brock Tines to earn an additional qualifier spot in the 3200 meter relay.

Kailee Potts  and Ava Reese went 1-2 in the 100 meter hurdles and both will be on the track in Omaha.

Potts also won and qualified in the 300 meter hurdles.

Kenna Busick also qualified individually in the 800 after running her personal best in a second place finish.

The girls 3200 meter relay, Busick, Libby Cole, Meredith Gloy and Charis Goodell also earned a spot in Omaha as an additional qualifier.

“Unfortunately, we did have other relays and individuals who were in the top three or four spots and were close but were not able to qualify with a fast enough time, a lot due to weather conditions,” Hite said.

With no seniors qualifying, both teams are pretty young so the Plainsmen are already excited for next season, Hite said.

Experience will be a key at the state meet, which Hite feels gives McGreer, Potts and the girls 3200 meter relay chances at medals.

Class C and D events will begin Friday morning. A schedule of events is available on page 6.
