The Perkins County volleyball team had an early triangular at Hitchcock County last Tuesday, then had time off to buckle down and prepare for the busy week ahead of it.

The Plainsmen swept Hitchcock County (2-8) to open the night.

PCS took a 10-3 lead in the first set, but later trailed 14-17. With Kailee Potts serving, the Plainsmen regained the lead, 20-17. Gracie Loy closed out the 25-21 win with three-straight points. Set two ended in the same score. Perkins County trailed by a point or two early, but, after tying the game at 13, used a five-point serving run by Charis Goodell to set up set point and close out the match.

PCS Head Coach Monica Cole said it wasn’t her team’s best night, but they came away with the sweep.

The Plainsmen took on Wallace (8-2) in their second match.

Cole said they knew Wallace was going to be tough from what they saw of the Wildcats in camp this summer.

Wallace took control from the first serve and won the opening set 25-13. The Plainsmen trailed 10-13 in set two, but came back to tie the game at 15. Wallace answered with a five-point run that put the set out of reach. Perkins County lost 19-25.

Cole said PCS had too many unforced errors to be able to win against them.

“It just wasn’t our night as we struggled connecting with our hitters and finding energy and intensity all the way throughout the night,” she added

“Although it was a bit of a tough night, in watching film, we did some really good things as well. We just have to capitalize on those more and eliminate our unforced errors and we’ll be just fine,” Cole said.

JV wins tourney

The PCS JV team won the Garden County JV tournament Saturday. The young Plainsmen swept Alliance, beat Bridgeport 2-1 then swept Leyton.

The Plainsmen have a busy week ahead.

Monday night PCS hosted Arthur County (6-5).

Thursday will be another chance for Perkins County to play in front of its home fans when South Platte (4-5) and Paxton (7-1) come to Grant. Paxton is ranked 10th in Class D2.

PCS will be at the Bridgeport Invite Saturday. The Bulldogs are currently 5-4. Also at the tournament will be Leyton (6-2) and Bayard (5-0).
