A young Perkins County team, now sitting with a 12-11 record, went up against a more experienced, and much taller, third ranked Maywood-Hayes Center, 23-1, on Friday, Feb. 17. Although the Plainsmen had spurts of momentum, they struggled, with the Wolves winning, 80-58.

“Maywood-Hayes Center is a good, athletic team,” said Head Coach Todd Kraus. “Early we didn’t take advantage of some of the gaps and were a little hesitant, mainly because of their size and athletic ability, and we gave up a lot of points offensively.”

Defensively, the Plainsmen also took themselves out of positions quite a bit, Kraus said.

“We went away from Perkins County defense at times,” he said. “We just settled and played individually and not as a team, which we need to do to win those types of games.”

The Wolves racked up most of their points in the first quarter with 25. They were nearly a dozen points ahead before the Plainsmen added points with a field goal by Dawson Tjaden. Also adding to PC’s 12-points in the first were Blake Garner, Colton Kroeker, Jackson Wykert and Nolan Foster.

The second quarter was similar to the first, with the Wolves scoring 18 points, and the Plainsmen adding 12. Contributing points for Perkins County in second quarter were Wykert, Foster and Kroeker to end the half at 43-26, M-HC.

The second half started off much better for the Plainsmen. Kraus commened that once his team settled down, they played well. Each team added 18 points to their scores during the third quarter, with Wykert, Kroeker, Foster, Landon Noyes and Garner contributing.

The Wolves again stayed one step ahead in the final quarter, outscoring the Plainsmen 19-14, with Noyes, Garner, Wykert, Tjaden, Rylee Schrotberger and Will Long adding points.

“We just had too many turnovers and need to be stronger with the ball and be sure of ourselves, especially defensively,” Kraus said.

The Plainsmen played in the first round of subdistricts against No. 10 rated Bridgeport on Tuesday. Kraus said he looked forward to getting subdistricts started.
