The Perkins County wrestling teams kept their coaches busy last week with the start of the season.

Friday was especially busy with the boys’ team at the Hi-Line Invite in Eustis and the girls’ hitting the mat at the Southwest Girls Invite in Bartley.

In its first season as a team at PCS, the girls’ team, Sarah Cockerill, Addisen Baker, Layla Vigil and Haley Dunn, all enjoyed their first times on the mat, PCS Head Boys’ Coach Tanner Collins said.

Collins said he looks forward to them getting better and gaining more experience.

Cockerill had the best day. Wrestling at 115 lbs., Cockerill went 2-3. Vigil finished with a 1-4 record at 120 lbs., while Baker at 120 lbs. and Dunn at 190 lbs. were 0-5.

PCS boys finished sixth out of 15 teams at the Hi-Line Invite, but 11th out of 12 at Broken Bow Saturday.

Juan Perez, ranked fourth in Class D took first place at Hi-Line in the 285 lb. bracket with three pins, including one over #6 Drew Knoerzer. At Broken Bow, Perez lost his second match of the day, but pinned his other three opponents.

“Juan looked strong. He beat some quality guys this weekend. He lost to a tough kid from Ord, but said he just got tired. We will get in better shape,” Collins said. Ord’s Bridger Rice is ranked first in Class C.

Mason Toner, ranked eighth in Class C got second in the 132-lb. bracket at Hi-Line after a loss by decision in the finals.

“Mason looked good on Friday. Lost the mental battle in his finals match. Saturday was a rough day for him,” Collins said. Toner lost both matches at Broken Bow.

Tony Lyon, 126 lb., went 1-2 at Hi-Line then bounced back to take third Saturday with a 3-1 day.

Lyon just didn’t settle in to things yet and looked a little sloppy Friday, Collins said, but Saturday he turned it around and looked pretty solid.

“Wrestled much cleaner and smarter,” he added.

Collins expects Toner and Lyon to drop down a weight class in a couple weeks.

“I believe that will really help them be the stronger kid on the mat,” Collins said.

Brient Wood finished second at 182 lbs. Friday and Domanic Williams had a good day at Hi-Line, as well, finishing 3-2 at 106 lbs.

“Brient looked great on Friday. Looked like he really found his groove. Saturday was a bit more of a struggle for him. I look for him to become more consistent throughout the season,” Collins said.

Brecken Uehling, wrestling at 285 lbs, picked up two wins each day.

Also competing for PCS were Henry Taylor, 145 lbs., Billy Taylor and Miguel Castillo, 152 lbs., Trevor Laber, 160 lbs., Preston Schwanebeck, 170 lbs., and Issiah Dunn, 220 lbs.

Up next

PCS will head to the Southern Valley Invite Friday.

“Southern Valley will have boys and girls. I am excited to see some different teams than usual and see what the kids learned from their opening weekends,” Collins said.
