Despite temps reaching into the 90s for their opening meet at North Platte St. Pats, the Perkins County Cross Country teams put forth a great effort, according to Head Coach Seth Burge.

“The weather did provide an additional challenge for all of the runners,” Burge said. “But, I was happy with the effort, and it’s good to get the first meet nerves out of the way.”

On the boys side, Burge said both Brock Tines and Brient Wood came away from the meet with more than a minute time improvement from the 2021 St. Pats meet. As for sophomore Mason McGreer, he improved his time by more than two minutes compared to last year, Burge said.

“Mason set an impressive new personal record of 17:26, which is a testament to the work he has put in over the last year,” Burge said.

Gavin Kohmetscher did not compete at the first meet due to illness.

On the girls side, senior Meredith Gloy ran a great race, Burge said, to finish with a medal and shaving more than a minute off of her time from last year.

Freshman Brenna Colglazier had a great first race and finished right in the middle of the pack, Burge said.

Maggie Fisher finished with a time slower than she is used to, but Burge blamed the heat, and Ava Reese did not race due to injury.

Heat will continue to be a nemesis for the runners during practice, and as they prepare for meets. However, Imperial has moved their meet up to help, Burge said.

“With the forecasted temperature to be over 100 degrees Thursday afternoon, Chase County has moved the meet to the morning to take advantage of the cooler temperatures,” Burge said.

The Chase County Meet will start at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8th. JV/V girls will race first, followed by JV/V boys.

Despite the weather, Burge said he looks forward to the Chase County meet where

the PCS crew will see more competition from both our its district and other classes. Chase County is a fairly flat course and loops, which make the race more spectator friendly. Additionally, our junior high student managers are entered to run the 3,000 meter junior high race on Thursday, which should be a fun race to watch.
