During the UNK Cross Country meet in Kearney last Monday, Sept. 26, it was another close race between two of the best runners in Class D, Mason McGreer of Perkins County and Jarrett Miles of North Platte St. Pats.
McGreer, for the second week in a row, came out the victor between the two harriers, finishing with a time of 17:12, just a fraction of a second ahead Mile last week.
“Mason was at least 30 feet behind Jarrett as they came around the final turn and had an impressive kick to catch Jarrett and win the meet,” said PC Head Coach Seth Burge.
Burge said, although warm, the weather was decent for the Monday on what is one of the hilliest courses the Plainsmen have to run on during the season.
Burge said he appreciates the UNK meet because the teams get to see most of the other Class D schools they will go up against at districts and state.
Besides McGreer’s steller performance, other good showings were given by Brock Tines, who had a good finish at the meet and had a course best time, Burge said. Both Tines and senior Brient Wood each had faster times than the 2021 state meet race, which was run on the UNK course, Burge said.
Burge also praised freshman Gavin Kohmetcher, who continues to improve and had another personal best time at UNK. “Gavin has shown more grit as the season progresses,” Burge said.
Girls’ Team
On the girls’ side, senior Meredith Gloy struggled some during the day, Burge said.
“She ran an impressive first and second mile, but the exhaustion caught up to her in the third mile and she finished later than she had hoped,” Burge said.
Other female competitors for the Plainsmen were freshman Brenna Colglazier, who ran a smart race and finished in the top half, “which is a great accomplishment for a freshman at the Kearney meet,” Burge said. Burge also praised Maggie Fisher for having a course best time.
Next Action
The Plainsmen will host the SPVA meet Thursday, Oct. 6, at Pheasant Run Golf Course north of Grant starting at 4 p.m.
“A couple of our workouts this week will include parts of our course, one advantage of hosting our own meet,” Burge said.
Burge stated that the change made last year where the race was started and finished near the clubhouse, will be kept after the change garnered good reception from the other schools involved.
Burge encourages spectators to come and cheer on the Plainsmen runners during the day.
“It is a spectator friendly course, so we welcome the community to come and cheer on our runners this week,” Burge said. “It also takes a lot of volunteers to run our SPVA meet, so we appreciate those who have signed up to help us on Thursday.”
