Plainsmen and Huskers: Let’s keep improving

It is hard to grasp that the high school fall season is almost a month old, but it is and the picture is a little clearer on which schools have maybe a chance at making a run in the playoffs or making a trip to the volleyball tournament or the state cross country meet.

Perkins County’s football team and the boy’s cross country team have had a pretty good start and appear to be pretty high caliber. The big thing now is to keep improving and getting better each week. That is where dedication from an individual and from teams come in and keeps the improvement needle over on high for the entire season.

It is evident that a lot of the athletes have made the effort it takes in the summer to get bigger, stronger and quicker. Good qualities in any sport. Good luck to all the teams the rest of the season.

Husker Football

How about them Huskers? Not a good statement grammatically speaking coming from an old English teacher, but still a question that has many answers at this stage of their season.

There are some things that seem pretty evident. One is the defense is a major, major issue for the Huskers. I would think most people who understand a little bit about coaching would agree that when you change coordinators and bring in a new scheme of things there is learning curve.

I don’t think too many people really thought that after two games in, the Husker D would give up 72 points, and almost 1,100 yards in offense to the opponents. If I remember correctly, after the win over Arkansas State and giving up 36 points and almost 500 yards, a statement to that was “As long as we have more points than the opponent, that is all that matters.”

But this week the Huskers actually lost the game in the first three or four minutes. I have to admit I stopped watching at the half when the Huskers were down 42-14, but it was because we were leaving to travel to Bartley to watch the Plainsmen.

The Huskers almost got the W with a much better second half, but almost doesn’t get you a W. The offense couldn’t bail them out because although they scored some points and the defense played much better, the hill was too tough to climb and the offense made errors when they needed to play error-free.

Tanner Lee looked pretty human this game where last week he was much better. Four interceptions will do that to a quarterback, but all quarterbacks have good and bad days so that is part of the game.

Probably more important is how bad Tre Bryant’s knee injury is and if he will have problems the rest of the season. Bryant had another 100-yard rushing game and that is a pretty good sign. You would hope he will just keep getting better as the season continues.

Sunday the NFL got into full swing so football is in full season now with all levels going strong. It is a good time of the year.

This Friday the Plainsmen should be facing a pretty good team in Sedgwick County. The Colorado bunch is defending state champions in their division and has a number of players returning. Come out to Haenfler Field and support the Plainsmen.
