Plainsmen compete at Paxton Last Chance Meet
The Perkins County Schools track and field teams competed at the Paxton Last Chance Meet on Thursday, May 7, at Sutherland Public Schools after the Best of the Midwest meet was canceled because of weather.
The Plainsmen turned in several strong performances on the boys side, highlighted by multiple first-place finishes and relay victories.
In the boys 100-meter dash, Mason Minster placed 10th in 13.03 seconds, while Aaron Ornelas followed in 11th at 13.36. Alex Cole earned seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.87.
Carson Green captured first place in the 400-meter dash in 53.91 seconds. Max Latella added a third-place finish in 55.44, Ornelas was fourth in 57.62 and Tyson Schwanebeck placed ninth in 1:05.21.
In the 800-meter run, Logan Barry placed fourth in 2:20.96, Jesus Marquez finished fifth in 2:21.55 and Leighton Fryzek earned sixth in 2:26.13.
Ethan Swesey won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:58.69. Fryzek added a fourth-place finish in 5:18.23. Swesey also won the 3,200-meter run in 11:40.63.
Luke Minster swept the hurdle events, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 18.24 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 43.51.
In relay action, the 4x100-meter relay team of Green, Latella, Spencer Williams and Ornelas placed fourth in 47.64 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay team of Cole, Latella, Williams and Green finished second in 3:44.83. Perkins County’s 4x800-meter relay team of Green, Barry, Marquez and Swesey took first place with a time of 8:48.09.
In the field events, Luke Minster placed fifth in shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 9.25 inches, while Schwanebeck finished 11th at 32-5.In discus, Luke Minster earned second place with a throw of 117-3. Mason Minster finished sixth at 104-8 and Schwanebeck was 12th at 90-8.
Williams placed eighth in long jump with a leap of 16-4.25 and added a fourth-place finish in triple jump at 35-4.
On the girls side, the Lady Plainsmen also posted several top finishes.
In the 100-meter dash, Anley Sauder placed third in 13.86 seconds. Ava Seger followed in fourth at 14.00, Olivia Gengenbach was sixth in 14.11 and Morgan Day placed 10th in 14.42. Sauder earned sixth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.82. Alyssa Laber placed sixth in 29.54 and Zoe Hansen finished ninth in 31.98.
Seger won the 400-meter dash in 1:07.64, narrowly ahead of teammate Haylea McGreer, who was second in 1:07.79. McGreer added a ninth-place finish in the 800-meter run in 2:58.90.
Madison Potts won the 1,600-meter run in 5:36.38, setting a new school record. Savannah Miller placed fourth in 6:28.41, Kayleen Jurado was sixth in 7:16.67 and Kinley Bottom finished seventh in 7:53.90.
Potts also captured first place in the 3,200-meter run in 12:19.85. Miller added a third-place finish in 14:22.20.
Ella Homan won the 100-meter hurdles in 16.84 seconds, while Macey Cole placed third in 18.45. In the 300-meter hurdles, Homan again took first in 49.44 seconds. Cole finished third in 53.90 and Morgan Day was fourth in 53.93.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Laber, Seger, Day and Gengenbach placed second in 53.56 seconds. In the 4x400-meter relay, the team of Gengenbach, Kinley Richmond, Bottom and Jurado finished third in 5:21.13.
In shot put, Jacqueline Gloy placed fifth with a throw of 31-5.5. Paige Franklin was sixth at 28-6.5, Ryleigh Johnson seventh at 28-3.5, Lila Hill 10th at 25-7.5 and Bristol Frazier 15th at 23-1. Franklin placed fifth in discus with a throw of 91-0. Gloy earned seventh at 80-9, Johnson was eighth at 78-7 and Shyne Hickey finished 10th at 77-10.
Cole placed sixth in high jump, clearing 4-7. In pole vault, Cole earned third place at 7-6 and Gengenbach was fourth, also clearing 7-6.
Lauren Bishop earned second place in long jump with a leap of 15-9.5. Sauder was fourth at 15-6.5, Hansen ninth at 13-10.75, Laber 11th at 13-8 and Richmond 13th at 12-3.
In triple jump, Bishop finished second with a mark of 34-2.75. Hansen added a sixth-place finish at 29-6.75 and Richmond was eighth.
Perkins County head coach Shayne Hite said he was pleased with the team’s overall performance.“It was a good meet for us,” Hite said. “Boys had 10 PRs and set six meet records while the girls had 15 PRs, set five meet records and had one school record by Madi Potts in the 1600. It was a smaller meet with finals only so we were able to work on a few things and rest a little. Now our focus is on getting our bodies to recover for Thursday with the district meet.”

Perkins County will next compete at the NSAA District Track Meet on May 14 at Perkins County High School.
