Plainsmen golf team nine strong for 2019 season

An extra harsh winter and a late start at any form of spring weather has put a bit of a hinder on the ability of the 2019 Perkins County boys golf team, however, they are practicing when they can and looking ahead to their first invite, March 27 at Cambridge.

Their first scheduled competition was to be Creek Valley, March 21, but was canceled.

Nine Plainsmen will make up the team this year.

One senior, Aaron Fay, will lead the team as a returning letter winner.

Juniors on the team will include Matthew Aerni, Deitrick Brueggeman, Carson Thelander, Kaden Smith and Jacob Woodmancy.

Woodmancy returns as a two-year letter winner, and Thelander as a one-year letter winner.

Chance Lotspeich and Keegan Sims are the sophomores on the team, while Blake Dolezal joins as a freshman.

Returning to the team is Head Coach Troy Kemling. The 2018 season treated the Plainsmen golf team well as they finished second at districts and placed eighth at state.

Coach Kemling said the team will be leaning on their three returning letter winners and their senior leader, Fay. “He works hard on his game in practice and wants to be the guy the others look up to. If you know Aaron, his sense of humor will make practices fun and memorable. I think he can be an effective leader for us,” Kemling stated.

“As the season unfolds, I expect our golfers to make improvements each week.  We will emphasize the short game, especially chipping while the weather warms allowing the greens to grow.  Once the greens smooth up, then improving on putting will be a daily goal,” he added.

There are 10 competitions on the schedule for PC this season before districts are held May 13.

“Districts are scheduled to be played at Cambridge.  It is a longer course, which should play into some of our strengths.

“However, Kimball will be tough this year and should be favored to win the district, based upon the returners they field,” Kemling said.

The Plainsmen golfers will head to Cambridge on March 27 for a 9 a.m. teetime,  before heading to Dundy County on April 2.
