The Perkins County Plainsmen hosted a home cross country meet last week on October 9 at Pheasant Run Golf Course. Seven other teams participated in this meet including North Platte St. Patricks, Chase County, Kimball, Hershey, Mitchell, Valentine, and Bridgeport. Despite warmer weather and challenging hills, both, boys and girls, teams competed well. “The weather was deceptively warm this week; we were becoming accustomed to temperatures in the 60s, and then an 80-degree day felt like a lot! I think the field of runners all felt the challenge of the weather as well as Pheasant Run Golf Course’s hills, but everyone still ran well,” said Head Coach Tristan Stephenson.
BOYS
The Plainsmen Boys placed runner up to the winning team, North Platte St. Patricks. As a team, Plainsmen scored 21. Elijah Goodell finished in first place with a 16 minutes, 10.28 second time. Close behind was Ethan Swesey in fifth place running a time of 18 minutes and 11.35 seconds. Stephenson highlighted the good competition presented by joining teams. “We had a good home SPVA conference meet! It was nice to have a couple more teams (Mitchell and Valentine) join the conference for this cross country meet. The numbers were a little higher, and the competition was good too. Truly, I would not be surprised to see a number of the runners from SPVA become state medalists in a couple of weeks,” he said.
Girls
Lady Plainsmen also took home the second place title. They finished just behind winning team Chase County. Madison Potts placed second, running a time of 21 minutes 11.23 seconds. She was the only one on the team to achieve a personal record. Behind Potts, came Savannah Miller in fifth place finishing with a 22 minute 55.93 second time. Haylea McGreer followed in eight place in earning a time of 23 minutes 37.55 seconds. “There were a plethora of course personal records from Perkins County runners, but Madison Potts was the lone runner to accomplish an overall personal record. This was a great practice run as we gear up to return to Pheasant Run for the D-6 District meet on Thursday, October 16,” commented Stephenson. m
