The Perkins County track will be a busy place Thursday when the Plainsmen host the C9 district track meet.

Joining PCS will be Bayard, Bridgeport, Chase County, Gordon-Rushville, Hemingford, Kimball, Mitchell and Morrill.

The meet will begin with boys pole vault at 9:45 a.m. followed 15 minutes later by boys discus and long jump, as well as girls high jump, shot put and triple jump.

The first session of track events will begin at 11:30 a.m., 3200 meter relay, prelims of the 100 meter hurdles, 110 meter hurdles and 100 meter dash. Finals for the 400 meter dash and 3200 meter run will happen before the session ends with the 200 prelims.

Girls pole vault kicks off the afternoon field events at 2:00 p.m. The remaining field events, boys high jump, triple jump and shot put plus girls discus, pole vault and long jump, start at 2:15 p.m.

The remaining running events will begin at 3:45 p.m.

Plainsmen Head Coach Shayne Hite said it will be very nice not to travel for the meet.

Last year Perkins County went to Mitchell.

Final two
regular season meets

The Plainsmen competed in nine events at the invitation-only Best of the Midwest May 2 in Sutherland.

Hite said it can be tricky because everything is finals only and the events are close together.

Mason McGreer only ran one individual event each because  the lack of time between events makes it hard to compete at a high level. Kailee Potts was also in only one individual event to protect a sore calf.

Mason McGreer won the 3200 meter run with a season best effort and ran the opening leg on the 3200 meter relay that finished second, also with a season best time.

Colton Kroeker, Rylee Schrotberger and Brock Tines joined McGreer to shave off nearly 30 seconds from their previous best.

For the Plainmen girls, the 3200 meter relay, Kenna Busick, Meredith Gloy, Charis Goodell and Libby Cole, was third.

The 1600 meter relay, Busick, Katie Cook, Cole and Kailee Potts, placed fifth.

Individually, Potts was fourth in the 300 meter hurdles, Cole fourth in the high jump and Ava Reese was sixth in the 100 meter hurdles.

Blake Garner was sixth in the triple jump and Conner Tyerman was seventh in the discus.

Perkins County was at the Dundy County Stratton Twilight Friday.

Hite said coaches went into the meet with their eyes on districts.

“At DCS we started to back people off a little especially the jumpers to let their bodies start to recover and be at full strength next week at district,” he said.

Both Plainsmen teams finished second overall. The girls team took second by four points over Maywood/Hayes Center.

McGreer won the 800 with a school and meet record time, 1:59.74.

The same 3200 meter relay quartet also claimed first.

Reese ran a PR and won the 100 meter hurdles and Potts took the 300 meter title.

Garner, Ethan Sihm and Oscar Bolt finished 2-3-4, respectively, in the 100.

Earning second place finishes were Busick, 800; Cole, high jump; and Preston Schwanebeck, pole vault.

Perkins County’s relays also ran well.

The girls 3200 meter relay placed second with a school record effort and the 400 meter relay and 1600 meter relays were third.

The boys 400 meter relay placed second and the 1600 meter relay was third.
