Plainsmen move to 11-10 with CV win
Coach Shawn Cole said the Plainsmen’s 76-56 win over Creek Valley last week provided some good momentum as the team closes in on subdistricts next week.
They will finish up the regular season here at home Friday night against Bridgeport.
Cole feels his squad can compete right with the 19-2 Bulldogs. A win would provide a bigger boost going into subs. Cole said the Plainsmen executed their transition game well, scoring 30 of their 76 points in transition. Add another 24 points to that from turnovers by Creek Valley against the Plainsmen’s pressure.
Cole said junior Triston Hite made a big impact on the game, especially in the first half. Hite and Hunter Garner lit up the nets in the first quarter. Hite got the Plainsmen’s first nine points of the game with three deuces and a 3-pointer. Garner followed up with the next five points, including a 3-pointer of his own for a 14-6 lead.
Creek Valley pulled back within four, 14-10, before the Plainsmen opened up a 20-10 at the break, thanks to six straight points from Hayden Foster.
In the middle of the second, Foster finished an and-one for a 16-point, 29-13 lead.
Creek Valley wasn’t going away without a run of their own. With less than a minute left in the half, they had trimmed the Plainsmen’s margin back to nine, 37-28.
Perkins County quickly boosted that back to 13 with a three-bagger from Ian Piquet and another by Garner at the buzzer for a 43-30 lead. Creek Valley could pull no closer than 11 early in the third before the Plainsmen opened it up for a 76-56 win.
Garner led the team with 27 points, shooting an effective 70% for the game, along with nine rebounds.
Hite added 18, going 6-10 inside the arc and 1-2 outside the arc.
Foster also finished in double figures with 13 points and eight rebounds while Ian Picquet added eight assists. The win moved the Plainsmen to 11-10.
During halftime of the Bridgeport game Friday night, Perkins County Schools will pay tribute to former teacher, coach, teacher and board member Larry Pritchett for his many years of service to the school and the community.
PC to host D1-12 subdistrict
Last week’s win against Creek Valley proved key in another aspect. It helped lock up the top seed in the D1-12 subdistrict.
The team with the highest wildcard points gets the opportunity to host the subdistrict. Right now, that’s Perkins County. As of Tuesday, the site had not been announced by the NSAA.
The Plainsmen will face off against Garden County, currently 4-11, in the first round with Morrill and Leyton facing off in the other bracket.
Cole said being able to play subdistricts on their home floor would be a big plus for the Plainsmen. Official pairings for all Class C1-D2 subdistricts are available on the NSAA website, nsaahome.org.
