Plainsmen open football season with win over Cambridge

Perkins County’s Plainsmen football team dominated the Cambridge Trojans in their season opener Friday night on Haenfler Field, notching their first win 48-26.

Cambridge came into the game rated second in the Omaha World-Herald’s preseason ratings in D1. The Plainsmen, coming off a 9-1 season last year, were rated eighth.

“It was a huge win for us,” Head Coach Lance Steffen said this week.

As a coaching staff, they don’t emphasize ratings—but the kids know, he said.

That no doubt provided some motivation going into the contest, he noted.

Steffen said his team executed well on both offense and defense. They stayed really focused and disciplined throughout the game, he added.

After nearly three weeks of preseason practice, Steffen said his team was ready for a game.

He noted it was a physical game Friday and felt his team measured up to Cambridge well in that department.

The Plainsmen led by two touchdowns before Cambridge broke loose on a fourth-down run good for 58 yards and a touchdown.
