Plainsmen roll over Kimball and Gothenburg in week two

Two wins for the Perkins County Plainsmen last week took the team to a 2-1 record as the season is just getting started.

PC traveled to Kimball on Friday, Dec. 7 and hosted the Gothenburg Swedes the next day.

Kimball

Friday night’s matchup had PC in Kimball to play the Longhorns.

The first quarter of the game was a back-and-forth battle where Kimball came out on top by one, 8-9 going into the second.

After three in for the Longhorns, Spencer Ross found the net for 10. A trey for Kimball took them to 18, but Ross went on to put up the next five points, and a basket from Alex Poppe brought PC within one, 18-17. Kimball managed to get two more in before halftime for a five-point lead.

The Plainsmen fought hard in the third despite Kimball opening up with a trey. Ross hit a triple and Fay followed with two treys of his own. At the end of the third, PC was down by just two, 34-32.

Fay drew a foul on an attempt for a three, and made all three free shots. Ross found the net for the next seven points for PC. Patrick added five points but it was Ross who finished up the game with eight more in from the free-throw line before the final buzzer. The Plainsmen took the Longhorns 55-47.

Gothenburg

The Swedes came to play in Perkins County on Saturday in what could be called a re-match, as last year these two teams battled it out and the Plainsmen came out victorious in a double overtime win.

This year the game looked to be another high-intensity matchup as the boys took the court.

The Plainsmen took off on a 10-point run before Gothenburg put up a basket, and by the end of the first quarter, PC was up 14-7. Eight of those Plainsmen points came from senior Spencer Ross.

Gothenburg came out swinging in the second and they added six triple-point shots, while their defense held the Plainsmen to just 13 points.

The score at halftime was 32-27, Gothenburg.

The Plainsmen continued to push through the third, but the Swedes kept the upper hand and going into the final quarter, Swedes were up by eight 46-38.

Ross put up a trey for the Plainsmen that switched the momentum. He added another one in the bucket before Aaron Fay sank a three bringing the Plainsmen up to a two-point deficit.

Ross, Fay and three free shots from Alex Patrick in the fourth quarter kept the game alive as it was tied 57-57, taking it to overtime, for the second season in a row for the Plainsmen and Swedes.

Patrick drew a foul and added two from the line, and was followed by a shot in the bucket from Caleb Lagler, which tipped the board in the Plainsmen favor. Despite a few in for the Swedes, they were never able to regain control of the board. The Plainsmen took the win 68-62.
