Hunter Garner carried the scoring load for the Plainsmen against Holyoke last week, scoring 24 of the team’s 37 points.

Plainsmen suffer losses to pair of Colorado teams

Perkins County’s venture into northeast Colorado for a pair of games left the Plainsmen still looking for wins.

On Jan. 28, the Plainsmen traveled to Holyoke for a matchup on the Dragon’s home floor.

The team suffered an 11-point, 37-48 loss at the hands of the Dragons.

With the exception of sophomore Hunter Garner, the Plainsmen experienced trouble scoring.

Of the team’s 37 points, Garner accounted for 24 of them.

Coach Shawn Cole said some of his regular scorers took very few shots throughout the contest.

He said his players must step up and score. If they had scored like they had been doing, he feels they would have won the game.

He said they are passing up good shots, which in turn negatively affects scoring.

On Thursday, Jan. 30, the Plainsmen hit the road again, playing Sedgwick County at Julesburg.

The team was without Garner, who rolled an ankle in practice last Wednesday and wasn’t available for the game.

Cole said that forced his other players to step up and fill the scoring hole left by Garner.

This time is was junior Hayden Foster who stepped up his game to finish in double figures with 14.

After one quarter, the Plainsmen trailed 18-11. In the second, they never trailed by more than eight until Sedgwick County hit a trey ball at the first-half buzzer to go up by 11, 30-19.

In the second half, Sedgwick County built on their lead for a 53-37 win over the Plainsmen.

On a positive note, Cole said his team played good defense against Sedgwick County. They held a team that has been averaging 70 points per game to just 53.

This week, the Plainsmen headed to Maxwell for a game Tuesday night.

They return to Pritchett Gym Saturday to face South Platte.

Cole noted both jayvee games and the two varsity games  will be played in the Pritchett Gym.

The girls jayvee action begins at 2:30 p.m., followed by the boys. He noted each team will only play three quarters.

That should set up the girls varsity game to start around 4 p.m., followed by the boys varsity game.
