Plainsmen take 6-2 record into D1 playoffs, open with Clearwater-Orchard rematch

The Plainsmen took care of business Friday, pounding the  Morrill Lions 85-8 to close out the regular season at 6-2. Now the focus switches to the D1 playoffs which begin Thursday.

Perkins County goes in to the 16-team West bracket as the No. 9 seed and will face a familiar foe in the first round—No. 8 seeded Clearwater-Orchard.

Two years ago, Clearwater-Orchard stunned the Plainsmen in a second-round game played on Haenfler Field.

“This gives us a chance to get a little back,” Head Coach Lance Steffen said this week.

The memory of that game will provide some extra motivation for both the coaches and the players, he said.

After a commanding first half, the Plainsmen came out flat in the second half and got beat in the closing minutes of the game.

That loss taught the team the importance of finishing, Steffen said.

That was one of the things he wanted his team to concentrate on Friday night at Morrill.
