Plainsmen take advantage of nicer days

While they still didn’t get a perfect day, the Perkins County track teams did enjoy some nicer weather for their meet at Chase County.

The week opened with the Chase County Invite Tuesday.

With team members starting to get frustrated, Head Coach Shayne Hite said he told his athletes to just be patient, good things were coming when they have some good weather to compete in.

That was certainly true Tuesday when the Plainsmen set 50 personal bests between the boys and girls teams on one of the nicest days they’ve seen.

Hite said there were a lot of bright spots.

Mason McGreer skipped his usual 1600 and 3200 meter races and did some sprint work in the 400 and 800. McGreer placed first in both events. His 800 win earned him the McNair Award.

All four Plainsmen boys in the 400 and all three in the 800 had personal bests.

PCS also had five PRs from each of its male athletes in the discus.

Hite pointed out Ryder Potts’ second place finish in the 200, saying he ran well in his return from injury.

On the girls side, Kailee Potts and Ava Reese went 1-2 in the 100 meter hurdles.

Hite said that was great to see.

Potts was first and Reese third in the 300 meter hurdles.

Hite was also excited to see Kenna Busick gain steam in the 800 meter run. Busick ran a PR and placed second.

The girls relay shaved 23 seconds off their 3200 season best and eight seconds off their 1600 relay best at Chase County.

Hershey Invite

It was back to chilly weather Saturday at the Mike Troxel Invite in Hershey.

“We had several good performances,” Hite said.

Garner won the 100 meter dash and triple jump. Garner PRd with a leap of 42’5”.

McGreer won both distance races, including a season best in the 3200.

Busick placed first in the 800 meter run.

Potts ran a season best in her winning 100 meter hurdle race. Potts also won the 300 meter hurdles.

Libby Cole claimed first in the high jump.

The boys 3200 meter relay was first and the girls placed second.

Hite said the 4x800s are coming around, but not quite where he wants them.

The boys knocked 14 seconds off their relay at Sutherland April 14.

Ava Reese continued to pick up steam in the 100 meter hurdles, running a personal best and finishing second behind Potts.

The girls 400 meter relay and boys throwers relay were both second.

Up next

The Plainsmen will head back to Hershey Friday for the SPVA meet.

Hite said he’s hopeful both teams can finish in the top three.

After last week’s performances, Hite expects to make a few changes to the lineups.

Also coming up is the Best of the Midwest May 2 in Sutherland.
