Plainsmen take first at PC invite

Perkins County hosted nine other schools at the Pheasant Run golf course last Tuesday for the Perkins County Invite.

“Ironically, the snow from the previous week almost derailed the tournament today. Hole No. 2 on the north side of the course was still covered with drifts but we were able to use our practice hole to complete the nine-hole round. It took some extra work from the course superintendent, Bill Bardsley, to make this event happen as scheduled,” Coach Troy Kemling said.

Despite the obstacles, the Plainsmen came out on top following a playoff against North Platte St. Pat’s, with a final team total of 337.

Kemling said, “We had a red-hot start to the day and were able to hang on, forcing a team playoff with St. Pat’s. In the team playoff, the top four varsity players of each team play a sudden death hole where all the scores are added together. The Plainsmen golfers ended up one better than St. Pat’s, claiming the team title, scoring a cumulative one over par.”

Senior Aaron Fay took first place on the individual scoring after shooting 33 on the front and 40 on the back for a day total of 73. Fay’s score was a personal best.

Kemling added, “He finished the day with a total of six birdies and had a run of four in a row at one point. This may be Aaron’s career day when everything went his way. This score lowered his personal best which was 81 at the start of the day.”

Junior Jacob Woodmancy placed fourth individually with a score of 81. Woodmancy took 40 strokes on the front nine and 41 on the back.

Carson Thelander, a junior, took 86 strokes on Tuesday, earning him the ninth place individual score.

Also competing for the Plainsmen were Kaden Smith, who shot a 97, and Deitrik Brueggeman who finished with a 123.

The JV players were able to gain experience as well, after playing nine holes against similar competition.

Junior Matthew Aerni topped the JV players finishing with a 64.

Blake Dolezal, a freshman, shot a 91 and sophomore Keegan Sims ended the day with 100 strokes.

“I really am encouraged by how the guys support and encourage each other. They are still playing golf today after the tournament as I send these results to you. A fun group that represents the school and county well,” Kemling said.
