Pouk, Meyer take first at Gordon-Rushville meet
Two Plainsmen wrestlers came home with first place medals in their bracket at the 16-team meet Saturday at Gordon-Rushville.
Colton Pouk and Austin Meyer each won their respective weight classes to help Perkins County to a 10th place team finish.
Pouk took the 138-lb. class with a pair of major decisions and a pin.
His first win came with a 9-1 decision over Morrill’s Daniel Koehl. His pin came in the semifinals over Leyton’s Brenton Abbott at the 3:55 mark.
Coach Tanner Collins said Pouk had a big lead in the finals against Ashton Lurtz of Valentine when Lurtz got a reversal and put Pouk on his back.
Fortunately, Collins said Pouk recovered and went on a a 13-5 decision.
Collins said Meyer wrestled up to his capabilities to take the 285-lb. class.
He pinned all three of his opponents. He put Hemingford’s Michael Rotherham down in 55 seconds.

In the finals Mullen’s Issac Welch lasted just 56 seconds before Meyer got his pin.
The Plainsmen were without Brandon Knoles and Bryder Hickey who were both taking the college entrance exam.
Collins said he’s seeing some big improvements in some of his younger or inexperienced wrestlers.
Junior Huntin Taylor, who is in his first year of high school wrestling has come a long ways. Collins said a fourth-place finish willh elp Taylor build some confidence.
Collins said Taylor’s younger brother, Henry, has made some big strides in his freshman year and is looking for that first win.
The Plainsmen travel to Sutherland, with 16 schools in the field.
There will be a number of teams at the meet that are Perkins County district. Collins said it will be a good chance to see how his kids stack up against district opponents.
