Snow doesn’t stop Perkins County’s E. Lee Todd Invite

It took a little finagling, but the 2023 E. Lee Todd Invite is in the books.

No only did organizers bump the meet up a day from Friday to Thursday to avoid predicted moisture and wind, Perkins County also had plenty of work to do to remove the remnants of an early week snow storm.

Snow piles were scattered around the facility and the grass of the infield took a beating, but everything was cleared to allow running and field events to occur.

Head Coach Shayne Hite said Dean Friedel, Shawn Cole and the Plainsmen coaching staff spent time getting everything ready.

Now, with only the May 11 district track meet left on the home schedule, Hite should get his wish to get in all three meets in Grant.

The Plainsmen were shorthanded at the meet with a group of athletes at the state FFA convention.

Hite said it was a good day to test mental toughness.

“Most did okay with this but we still have to work on this,” he added.

The girls team finished second behind defending Class D state champion North Platte St. Pat’s.

“I’m very proud of how the girls performed short-handed. Tried a few new things that we may try at SPVA for points,” Hite said.

Kenna Busick won the 800 meter dash, Libby Cole the high jump and Kailee Potts swept the hurdle races.

Cole, Carlie Homan, Busick and Potts combined to win the 1600 meter relay.

PCS also got second place finishes from Homan in the 200 meter dash and Cole in the 400 and 800 meters.

The Plainsmen boys team placed fifth.

Blake Garner led the way with wins in the 100 meter dash and triple jump and second place finish in the 200 meter dash.

Landon Noyes was first in the pole vault.

Up next

Perkins County traveled to Benkelman Tuesday for the Dundy County Stratton Invite.

After that, the next meet will be April 14 at the Sutherland Invite.

PCS will make good use of the 10 days.

“We just need some workouts so the time off will be good for us. As long as the weather holds out and we can practice outdoors,” Hite said.
