Swim team closes out season at Championship Meet

The Perkins County swim team 2021 season came to an end at the Championship Meet at McCook Saturday, July 17.

The season began the week after Memorial day and team members practiced Monday through Thursday for an hour each morning to prep for their competitions.

The team had 23 members on this year’s team, ranging from the “8 and Under” to the “Over 18” age groups.

This year’s “8 and Under” competitors included Cora Dodson, Emelia Hill, Caleb Hoff, Seylah Miller, Jordyn Tjaden and Cami Tjaden.

The 9-10 age group included Grant Gloy, Lila Hill, Jacob Hoff, Ryleigh Johnson, Brooklynn Lampmann, Mason Minster and Kinley Richmond.

11-12 year old competitors were Macey Cole, Hanna Colglazier, Mya Deaver, Savanah Miller and Luke Minster.

Jacqueline Gloy was the only competitor in the 13-14 age group.

“Over 18” competitors were Angela Gloy, Megan Hoff, Amy Johnson and Shana Kraus.

Their meets began in June with a competition in St. Francis, Kansas and continued weekly until the July 17 Championship Meet. Gloy said nearly all of the team’s swimmers qualified for Championships.

Races included long free, backstroke, breaststroke, short free, individual medley and free relay.

The team had many competitors rank in the top three of each age group at Championships, including Megan Hoff, Angela Gloy, Mason Minster, Luke Minster, Cora Dodson, Savannah Miller and a relay team consisting of Caleb Hoff, Jacob Hoff, Mason Minster and Luke Minster.

Coach Gloy said she had a great swim team experience growing up and she wants the same for Perkins County’s swimmers.

“I love working with the team on stroke and turn technique, and if you could see our ribbon and medal trove, you’d know we have some really good swimmers,” Gloy noted. “We swim well every week. Moreover, it’s a great group of kids that are wonderfully supportive of one another. I am crazy proud of our team every year.”

Gloy also noted that swim team is open to everyone, and the only requirement is to be able to swim one lap unassisted.

“We’re always looking for more willing victims!” Gloy joked.
