Toner, Pouk first at Hi-Line meet

    Perkins County’s wrestlers finished sixth of 14 teams at the Hi-Line Invite in Elwood to start the season off Friday. 

Mason Toner at 126 and Colton Pouk at 145 each earned first place medals with  Tony Lyon and Ashton Meyer also winning medals. 

Coach Tanner Collins said his wrestlers looked good in their matches Friday. 

However, he said they didn’t wrestle near as well on Saturday at the Broken Bow Invite. 

Toner pinned his first three opponents before taking a 10-4 decision over Cambridge’s Dirks Sayer to stand atop of the medal podium.

After getting a bye in the first round, Pouk picked up a pin in the quarterfinals, along with a 16-0 technical fall in the semis. He finished with a medical forfeit from Sam Foster of Sutherland. 

Ashton Meyer opened his season at 285 with a second place finish. 

Meyer collected three pins en route to the first place match where he gave up a pin to Arapahoe’s Levi Kerner. 

Collins noted Meyer defeated SEM’s Brendon Hall who was ranked third preseason. Kerner is ranked second preseason. 

At Broken Bow, he collected two pins before falling to the number one seed.

Pouk was the only Plainsman to come home from Broken Bow with a medal. He collected a pair of pins before losing a 6-2 decision in the first place match. 

On Friday, the Plainsmen will travel to Southern valley for their invitational. 

It will be a big meet with 20 schools from Classes B, C and D competing.
