Tough schedule challenging PCS volleyball

The Perkins County knew it would have its hands full last week with matches against Class C-1 number three Gothenburg, Chase County and Colorado 2A number two Sedgwick County.
The Plainsmen traveled to Gothenburg and took on 11-12 CCS in the second of the triangular’s three matches.
PCS gave up a seven-point run to the Longhorns and fell behind 7-11 in the first set. The Plainsmen pulled to within one point, 13-14, but gave up a five-point run and lost the set 18-25.
In the second set, CCS scored the game’s first eight points. PCS could never get itself within striking distance and lost the set 25-13.
PCS wrapped up the night with a loss to 20-2 Gothenburg.
The Plainsmen never held serve in the first set against the Swedes. Gothenburg scored the final 12 points of the set, giving Perkins County a 6-25 loss.
PCS held serve better in the second set, but couldn’t string more than three points together. The Plainsmen lost the match with a 13-25 loss in the second set.
Perkins County hosted 13-1 Sedgwick County Thursday.
The timing could have been better for PCS. The match was Sedgwick County’s first following its first loss of the season and subsequent fall from number one in the standings.
Perkins County grabbed a 5-4 lead in the first set. The Cougars had other ideas and scored seven-straight points. PCS went on to drop the set 14-25.
The Plainsmen trailed 8-9 in the second set before a 2-7 run by Sedgwick County put the set out of reach. Perkins County lost the set 17-25.
The Plainsmen continued to show improvement in the third set. Despite falling by an identical 17-25 score, PCS hung around and only trailed 12-13 before six-straight points swung the momentum back to the Cougars’ favor.
JV Tournament
PCS hosted its annual JV tournament Monday. The Plainsmen beat Wallace 2-1, Holyoke 2-1 and lost to Ogallala 0-2. Also at the tournament was Wauneta-Palisade and Hershey.
Up next
The Plainsmen hit the road for Oshkosh Tuesday for a triangular with the Eagles (13-7) and Wauneta-Palisade (6-12).
A rematch with CCS will be Thursday in Imperial.
Next Tuesday, PCS will go to Hershey for a triangular with 0-21 Dundy County Stratton and the 13-5 Panthers.
SPVA volleyball will be held Oct. 15 by PCS.
The regular season will end at home Oct. 18 against 3-13 Kimball.
