Junior Hannah Kempf breaks through Kimball’s defense to reach the basket.

Varsity Lady Plainsmen fall to their opponents

The Lady Plainsmen faced off against Kimball and Gothenburg last week, dropping both contests to fall to 0-4.

The team got off to a rough start on Friday, something Coach Katie Cross attributes to a lack of tempo and enthusiasm.

Kimball came out strong, but the Lady Plainsmen fought to keep the scores even. They finished the first quarter just behind Kimball, who held an 8-7 lead.

The opposing team’s lead grew in the second quarter, as they added 13 points to the scoreboard, while Perkins County was only able to put up three points. Kimball remained ahead with 21-10 at half.

Hannah Kempf sank a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter, adding the only three points for Perkins County in that quarter. Kimball added 11 points to their score, bringing their lead to 32-13.

Cross put in her younger jayvee players in the second half after they took a big win over Kimball’s jayvees earlier in the night.

The Lady Plainsmen picked up their tempo, according to Cross, and put eight points on the board, while defending well enough that Kimball was only able to sink two baskets.

This brought the final score to 36-21, with Kimball victorious.

Dani Burge led the team in scoring with four.

Gothenburg

The energy and enthusiasm the Lady Plainsmen built up at the end of their game against Kimball continued into their game against Gothenburg Saturday.

Cross says while the score may not reflect the effort, the girls made a much-needed turnaround.

Gothenburg quickly gained a lead on Perkins County, scoring 19 points in the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Lady Plainsmen were only able to put three points on the board.

The Swedes picked up another 12 points in the second quarter, continuing their lead over Perkins County 31-8 at half.

Perkins County continued to put up a fight against the Swedes, but the girls were ultimately unable to overcome their opponents.

The Lady Plainsmen fell to Gothenburg in the end 56-17 despite their enthusiasm and hard work.

Meghan Bishop and Dani Burge were the top scorers of the game for Perkins County, scoring six points each throughout the game.

Cross noted Gothenburg is a great basketball team with speed and strength, and playing against them gave the girls an idea of what to work on before facing off against Paxton and Garden County.

Next Action

The Lady Plainsmen hosted Paxton on Tuesday evening.

On Thursday, the Perkins County girls will travel to Garden County, who is currently 0-5. The jayvee game will begin at 4:30 p.m.

The girls will then host Dundy County Stratton on Saturday. They are 5-0 going into this week.

“If we can play with enthusiasm and take those lessons we have learned from Kimball and Gothenburg, I think we can do well this week in our upcoming games,” Cross said.

Junior Varsity

The jayvee team added a win to their record against Kimball on Friday.

They got an early lead on Kimball with 14-5 in the first quarter, and held onto that lead to the end. Perkins County won 43-21. Kaylee Dilsaver was the top scorer for the jayvee Lady Plainsmen with eight points.

Their game against Gothenburg Saturday was only two quarters. Scores were not available at press time.
