Waitley district champion, team runner-up

The Perkins County boys cross country team is state bound after a second place finish at the D-6 District meet in Bayard Oct. 12.

Junior Caden Waitley claimed the district championship title with a time of 17:48. He finished 15 seconds in front of second place finisher Jack Linders of Bridgeport and 26 seconds in front of third place finisher Alex Araujo of Bayard.

Coach Paula Wurst said it’s been nine years since they’ve had a district champion and 10 years since a boys’ team has qualified for state.

Junior Jaden Dietlein took a medal for seventh place and “ran really strong,” said Wurst.
