Wallace’s Trey Robertson knows he’s held off Mullen’s Trevor Kuncl as he crosses the finish line with a personal best to win the gold medal in the Class D 3200. Robertson added a third place with another personal best in the 1600 to score all of Wallace’s 16 points to place the Wildcats 15th in the field.

Wallace’s Trey Robertson wins 3200, third in 1600 at state track

Wallace sophomore Trey Robertson repeated his district championship in the 3200 with a state championship at the Class D state track meet in Omaha.

Robertson turned in a personal best of 10:06.04 to set a new school record and claim the gold.

Robertson stayed just behind the leaders for most of the race and turned it on coming into the final stretch to claim the gold Wednesday morning.

He used a similar approach in the 1600 Thursday but couldn’t catch Paxton’s Colter McCasland, settling for third despite another personal best in the event.

In girls competition, Mariah Gardner’s best finish came in the 3200 with a 14th place finish. She finished 16th in the 1600.

The girls 4x800 relay team finished 17th in the field.

Freshman Kendyl Flaming got her first taste of the state meet atmosphere, competing in the 400 and 300 hurdle prelims.

In Class C, the same was true for Perkins County freshmen Kailee Potts who ran in the 100 and 300 meter hurdle prelims and sophomore Casey Hanson competing in the 400 prelims.

With no state meet held last year due to COVID-19, sophomores had no previous state meet experience to take into the meet.

Perkins County Junior Colton Pouk made his best showing in the 800, finishing  14th in a field where the first seven places all broke the two-minute mark. He was 22nd in the 1600.

Chase County Girls take C

Chase County girls’ dom-inance in Class C continued this year with their third state title in the last four state meets (no state meet was held last year).

Chase County’s Bryn McNair led the Longhorns with a first place finish in the 400, second in the 800, third in the high jump and anchor of the 4x400 first place relay team.

Senior Kamrie Dillan won the 200 and was second in the 100 and ran on the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

The Longhorns scored 68 points in the meet to overpower Hastings St. Cecelia, who finished runner-up with 48 points.

Meet ran over 4 days

Due to COVID-19, this year’s state meet was held across four days. Class D and A competed on Wednesday and Thursday with Class C & B competing Friday and Saturday.

Each class competed in a morning or afternoon session the first day, which included some field events, 4x800 relays, 3200 and prelims in the hurdles and dashes.

Remaining field events were completed in the second session and all running events were finals.

NSAA officials said they had more positive than negative comments about the four-day format.

While the turnaround for athletes was quicker, it wasn’t much different than a regular meet.

They also said the format was a hit with fans, making parking, seating and crowds much easier to deal with.
