Expectations are high whenever the top teams in the state match up.

Wallace and Cody-Kilgore played up to those expectations Friday when the number three ranked Wildcats traveled to the second ranked Cowboys.

Cody-Kilgore, last year’s six-man state champions, grabbed the first quarter lead in the closely contested game.

Wallace tied the game at 6-6 in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by Carson Glunz, but the Cowboys took a 12-6 lead into halftime.

Although Wallace never held the lead, it never let Cody-Kilgore pull away.

Carson Glunz finished the night with 148 yards rushing, including a 41-yard touchdown run that sent the teams to the fourth quarter tied at 12.

Glunz’s third touchdown of the night tied the game at 18-18 in the fourth quarter.

Cody-Kilgore made the only extra point of the game to give it a seven-point lead as time ran down.

Trailing 18-25, Wallace scored on a 25-yard pass from Kyler Flaming to Matt Lungrin, but with the failed extra point lost the game by one, 24-25.

Wallace Head Coach Eric Miller said he’s proud of the Wildcats for battling the entire game.

“We kept fighting back whenever we got down.  We have plenty of things that we need to clean up before the next game in two weeks, after a bye,” Miller said.

Overall, Cody-Kilgore scored three rushing touchdowns and cashed in once through the air.

Riley Strawder and Glunz each had nine solo tackles for Wallace. Strawder also had the team’s only sack. Masen Messersmith totaled 16 tackles in the game.

Flaming punted twice for the Wildcats, averaging 37 yards per punt. Flaming also blocked a field goal in the game.

Wallace’s next game will be Sept. 9 at home against Garden County. The Eagles lost to Arthur County 49-84 last week.
