The Wallace football team ran into a buzz saw Friday night at Arthur County.

Wallace fell to the unbeaten Wolves 40-71.

Arthur County was first to get on the board, but Wallace responded and tied the game at 6-6 with 6:14 left in the first quarter. The Wolves added two more touchdowns before the quarter came to an end.

After scoring with one minute left in the first quarter, Arthur County also scored in the first minute of the second quarter.

Wallace added its second touchdown of the game with just under eight minutes left in the first half. Unable to find the end zone again, the Wildcats trailed 12-44 at halftime.

Coming out from the locker room, Wallace scored the first two touchdowns of the third quarter and narrowed its deficit to 24-44. The Wolves had other ideas and scored two in the last three minutes of the third quarter to leave Wallace trailing 24-59 going into the final stanza.

The Wildcats traded touchdowns with Arthur County in the fourth quarter. With successful two-point conversions, Wallace outscored the Wolves 16-12 over the game’s final 10 minutes.

“Arthur County came out and punched us in the mouth.  We battled the second half, but it takes four quarters of good football to beat a great team like Arthur County. “

After starting the season 1-3, Miller said he’s proud of his guys fighting back the second half of the season to put themselves in the playoffs.

The D6 playoffs has several familiar teams. Arthur County earned the second seed, Cody-Kilgore the seventh seed, Southwest the 12th seed, Brady the 14th seed.

The Wildcats are one of three teams to finish the season with 38.500 points and were named the 16th seed.

Wallace will travel to top seeded Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Monday. The undefeated Mustangs join Arthur County and Potter-Dix as the only undefeated teams in Class D6.

“We have a tough opponent in SEM, but our guys will be ready for it,” Miller said.
