Wildcats to host subs

With only one game remaining for its regular season, the Wallace boys basketball team has locked down the number one seed in the D2-9 subdistrict and the hosting duties that come with the top seed.

Wallace’s remaining regular season game will be  Friday against Creek Valley (2-15). 

Subdistricts will be next Tuesday and Thursday.

A win last Friday against Hitchcock County (11-9) certainly didn’t hurt.

Five Wildcats scored in the first quarter, including Matt Lungrin who scored six of Wallace’s 12 points.

Wallace was able to take a two point advantage into halftime, behind a three pointer by Lungrin and baskets by Masen Messersmith and Jason Fisher.

Trey Robertson scored five points and Kyler Flaming added four as the Wildcats increased their lead to 33-25 at the end of three quarters.

Hitchcock County had other ideas and held Wallace to two field goals in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats left the door open with four missed free throws, but hung on for a 38-36 win.

Lungrin finished the night with 12 points and Robertson scored 10.

The Wildcats lost a game with Southwest Thursday. 

Each Wallace starter scored in the first quarter as the Wildcats jumped out to a 13-8 lead. 

Southwest erased the deficit and put Wallace in a hole with a 23 point second quarter.  Lungrin did everything he could to keep the Wildcats in the game, hitting a three pointer in the second quarter and three more 3s in the second half. 

Trailing 19-31, Wallace nibbled away at the lead in the third quarter. Besides two 3s by Lungrin, Conner Kennicutt hit a three of his own. 

The Wildcats’ deficit was 11 points, 32-43, starting the fourth quarter and, with only two field goals, Wallace was unable to close the gap, losing 39-56. 

Lungrin finished the night with 14 points.
