Wrestlers get lots of matches at Chadron
Perkins County’s grapplers got just what they needed at last weekend’s Chadron meets—lots of matches.
Some wrestlers got as many as nine matches in two days of tournaments.
“We got a lot of good match time,” Coach Tanner Collins said Monday.
That will also help improve their conditioning, he said, as they prepare for districts Feb. 14-15 at Hershey.
The format of the two-day Chadron tournament includes a dual tournament on Friday and regular bracket tourney on Saturday.
Originally, the Plainsmen were only scheduled to wrestle Saturday but Collins said one of the teams dropped out of the duals, opening the door for Perkins County.
The team competed in five different duals Friday. Collins said the Plainsmen have too many open weights to win a dual but getting the matches in were more important.
Jace Wid went 4 and 1 at 160 but suffered a muscle pull during one of the matches. He was only able to wrestle one match Saturday before having to pull out due to the injury.
Brandon Knoles at 220 and Colton Pouk at 132 each went 3 and 2 in the duals.
Knoles finished fourth in Saturday’s tournament with Pouk taking sixth.
In the jayvee tournament, Bryder Hickey finished second in the 145-lb. class.
Collins said Wid likely won’t wrestle until districts. His record now stands at 14-3.
Knoles was among those getting nine matches in last weekend and is well on his way to having more than 40 matches by district. His record stands at 28-9.
The Plainsmen finished 16th in the 22-team field. District foe Valentine won the meet with 241 points. Bridgeport, another district team, finished fourth.
The Plainsmen saw three other teams in their district last weekend: Chase County, Mitchell and Gordon-Rushville.
The Plainsmen will see another district team when they travel to Kearney Friday to face Kearney Catholic in a dual. Then on Saturday they will compete in the Doniphan invitational.
