Three spot fires broke out in a ditch on Road 758 between Roads 321 and 322 last Tuesday, June 22 in the early afternoon. The fires were scattered across approximately a quarter mile through the ditch. The Grant Volunteer Fire Department responded with two units, as well as the Madrid Volunteer Fire Department who brought a grass rig to the fire location. Don Softley, who responded to the scene, said they had the fire completely extinguished in just a few minutes. Softley thinks it is possible the fire was caused by a hot bearing, debris from a hot break shoe or something else mechanical. Fire Chief Rick Dreiling said Monday, June 28 that the GVFD responded to seven fires during the month of June, compared to zero in June 2020, adding there have been lots of lightning fires throughout this month.
