Perkins County’s fourth (above) and fifth (below) grade classes gathered Wednesday, May 5 at Grant City Park to celebrate Arbor Day by planting three trees with the help of tree board members as well as Lions Club. Tree Board member Jon Forney provided the students with tips on how to best plant trees and facts about trees both in general and specifically those planted at the park. The students wore t-shirts provided by Cotton Empire, which the kids designed themselves. The trees were donated by the Grant Lions and the City of Grant.

A friendly competition is happening at Perkins County Elementary school. Students Olivia Gengenbach (left) and Porter Tjaden (right) have built this impressive bridge using several building toys called “K’Nex.” The duo thought it would be fun to see if anyone in the student body could guess just how many pieces were used. The bridge was put on display in the hallway at the elementary and guesses are being entered. Gengenbach and Tjaden are the only two who know how many pieces went into the bridge and they plan on finding out who the winner is this week. According to Tjaden, his parents, Casey and Nicole, owners of Tjaden Ranch have agreed to sponsor the competition and the winner will have their choice of a variety of beef jerky flavors.
